While we drive, the tire tread slowly gets worn down until the tires become bald. When this happens, tires are no longer safe to use and must be replaced. In fact, by law, you must have a certain level of tread on a tire for your vehicle to pass inspection. Tires are expensive though and we want to get the most out of them. So, here are some tips to help you prolong the life of your tires:
- Proper Tire Pressure: Tires that are overinflated will cause the tread to wear out much faster than normal while underinflated tires will damage the tire and your rims. Properly inflated tires provide the correct amount of protection for your rims while also not overusing your tire tread.
- Tire Rotations: When a tire is left in one spot during its lifetime, only a certain portion of the tread is utilized and not the whole thing. This means that your tire tread will unevenly wear and need to be replaced soon. We recommend rotating your tires every time you get an oil change.
- Balance Tires: Much like tires that are not rotated, unbalanced tires also experience uneven treadwear. If you notice your tires excessively shaking or pulling to one side, they may be misaligned.
Whether you drive your truck, tractor, or regular car off-road or not, having tires in good condition is crucial. Popped tires can be incredibly inconvenient, and even cause costly damage to your rims, axle and other parts of the vehicle. While sharp objects, potholes, and other hazards of the road can cause a tire to pop, other factors play a part also, and can act of warning signs if you know what to look for.
Tire age is a great benchmark to use when determining whether or not you need new tires. In general, six years is the recommended age that you should swap your tires out for a new set, regardless of their condition. Of course, if other factors are present (like the tread being worn down consistently driving over rough terrain), you should consider finding a tire shop sooner to protect yourself on the road.
